Our Engagement Story

On Thursday night March 9, 2000 Bryan was scheduled to work at an Oratorio Concert in Truett Auditorium that he told me began at 7:00 p.m. I was at Bryan's house relaxing with him until he had to be at work at 6:00. He had asked me to help him choose what to wear and by then it was 5:45 and I had to leave so that I would have time to take a shower and get ready myself. I came back to my room, took a shower, and got ready for the concert. I had asked Bryan earlier in the day if I should wear a certain semi-formal black outfit and he told me later that he was trying to figure out a way to convince me to wear that exact thing!!!

Anyway, I was running late, of course, and didn't leave my room until 6:50 so I rushed over toward the auditorium lobby. As I was walking I saw Ben Smith, who is one of Bryan's best friends, walk out of the auditorium lobby talking on his cell phone in a pair of khaki shorts. I knew that he wouldn't be going to the concert dressed like that so that was my first clue that something was going on. When I walked into the lobby I was greeted by Ben and his wife Dana. Ben handed me a card which read,

"Dearest Amy,

Don't be frightened by what Ben asks you to do. I'm okay. We will be together in a few minutes. I love you. I can't wait to see how beautiful you look tonight.

Love, Bryan"

Dana then handed me a beautiful bouquet of a dozen roses and they led me through the Rotunda to the front entrance of the main building of the seminary. We walked out to Bryan's truck and they put me inside and handed me Bryan's sunglasses cleverly covered with a handkerchief to act as a blindfold (if you want to see the picture you have to talk to Ben and Dana). I heard Ben call Bryan on his cell phone as Dana talked to me to try to keep me calm. The next thing I knew Ben said, "Miss Amy, have a good night," and closed the door of the truck. The other door opened and closed and we began to drive out of the parking lot. I kept trying to talk to Bryan but he kept telling me to be quiet as we drove across town.

By this time I was well aware of what was going on and my mind was racing. I had a pretty good idea of where we were going, but it seemed like it was taking too long to get there. In my mind I was trying to commit to memory every last detail that had happened so far because I knew that this night was going to be a once in a lifetime event. Even though I knew what question was forthcoming and I knew what my answer would be, that didn't calm my nerves.

Finally we stopped and Bryan said that I could take off the blindfold as long as I kept my eyes closed. I took off the glasses as he got out of the truck. I heard him put down the tailgate and my first thought was, "if he thinks I am getting into the back of this truck all dressed up then he's got another thought coming"! He came and opened my door and helped me out of the truck and around to the back. He sat me up on the tailgate and told me that I could open my eyes, but I had to look forward and not to either side. When I opened my eyes Bryan was wearing his tuxedo. As I suspected, we were on Grandbury Road that leads out to Benbrook Lake. It was the exact spot where we decided to start dating.

Bryan looked down at me smiling and said, "Amy, I have been searching for many years. I've made a lot of mistakes and have learned a lot of lessons. I have never loved anyone as much as I love you. And I was wondering, in spite of all my faults and mistakes, all the stuff that's unattractive, would you give me the honor of being called your husband."

He then reached down beside me and brought out a heart shaped cookie with pink icing around the edges and little conversation hearts that all said "Marry Me". In the middle of the cookie was a beautiful diamond ring. He got down on one knee, put the ring on my finger, and said, "Amy Wiest, will you marry me?" I said of course and he got to his feet and hugged me.

We went back to his house and began calling family and then went out to dinner at Texas Land and Cattle. Afterward we stopped by Ben and Dana's to thank them for all of their help and then we went to tell some other friends.
